On Tuesday November 5th 1861 William Villers opened the Bay View Hotel (named then the Petane Hotel).
It was the largest country hotel in the district and was a well known landmark to travellers on the road.
In the old days it was the last change of horses for the coaches travelling between Wairoa & Napier.
The original hotel was distroyed by fire, and the present hotel was rebuild around 50 years ago with the addition of our games bar 1973. It is still the largest country hotel in Hawkes bay.
Our hotel is situated in a quiet little village 8 km from Napier City center only 800 metres from the beach.

We offer great affordable bistro meals 6 days a week, and our famous "Pig on a Spit" buffet every sunday night.

We stage probably the largest Pig Hunting competition in New Zealand on Labour Weekend every year, offering the highest prize pool in the country. Large cash prizes.
People come from all over New Zealand to enter, bringing all there family for a great family day. (there is also a "possum" event for the kids). We can have up 1000 + here for this spectacular event.
